John McGreavy 10a 285

Recorded in the index as "McGravey"  and this is the case on the memorial although it is McGreavy in other records.  Clearly this is the same person, aged 52. He died 2nd March 1885 as a result of an explosion, firedamp and coal dust, ignition caused by shot firing, (42 lives lost) at Usworth Colliery.  John was a shifter (man who repaired the horse-ways and other passages in the mine to keep them free from obstructions. )

A memorial is in the churchyard of Usworth Parish Church - Holy Trinity, Donwell Report on accident is here

He is buried in Washington - Our Lady's Catholic Church here
