Great Charlotte Street - St John's Market

1832

The view is from Queen Square with the old St John's Market building stands right whilst left is The Royal Ampitheatre (not to be confused with the Theatre Royal on Williamson Square, nearby). Just beyond the theatre can be seen a fraction of part of one of the old fish markets (not to be confused with one near James Street however).

The orientation of the picture is confirmed by the distant tower of St Luke's on Hardman Street. Ironically this now bombed-out ruined church is the only building still standing 180 years after this picture was made.
