A statue of George III was to have been erected in Great
George Square and the
foundation stone was actually laid on his golden jubilee, in 1809. The response to the
mayor's appeal for funds to complete the project was tardy and some
years
passed before the statue, executed in bronze by Sir
Richard Westmacott, was
finished. (Westmacott also executed the Nelson statue on exchange
flags in Liverpool).
The statue of George III was placed
on 30th September 1822, "In commemoration
of the 50th Anniversary of the Accession of his most gracious
majesty / King George III / to the Throne of these realms
" It was placed, not
in Great George's Square, but in London Road at its junction with Pembroke Place.
This is now called
Monument Place (with thanks to Liverpool
Pictorial for this information).
