1831
One of the earliest
docks and of curious shape, only 6m wide. This was built
in 1773 for the Duke of Bridgewater. It was intended to facilitate
the transport of goods to and from the inland canal system.
In 1811 the Grain Warehouse shown here, was built. A half-tide
dock was added in 1851 but Duke's Dock remained outside of the
main dock system until its incorporation in 1899. Even
then it was hardly developed and it remained unused
other than for its storage facilities until demolition started
in 1960. By 1984 the buildings had all gone and the river entrance
was closed.
What now survives are the foundations of the warehouse and the 18th
C sandstone and granite dock walls, supposedly the most complete
in Liverpool. Having been demolished within the last 20 or so
years the remains are now Grade II listed - see if you can figure
the sense in that, or is it historic vandalism with a heart ?
